This site will continue to grow as a dedicated resource for the field. We’re glad you’re here.

What is a traffic garden?

A traffic garden is a scaled-down street network designed for children and new riders to practice biking and road safety in a car-free environment. Also known by many other names like safety town or traffic playground, these interactive spaces build confidence, teach essential life skills, and bring communities together. In the U.S., where many children lack access to safe streets for everyday travel, traffic gardens offer a vital opportunity to learn and grow. With U.S. youth biking rates declining steeply over the past two decades, these spaces help fill the gap by providing a safe, engaging way for kids to gain mobility skills, and joy through active play.
